In the 1966 movie Fantastic Voyage, tiny scientists took an awe-inspiring cruise through
the vast frontiers of the human body in a tiny submarine, saving the life of a Russian
defector in the process. Fast-forward 20 years to 1986 and Eric Drexler’s book Engines
of Creation. Humans tinker with what nature gave them, using self-replicating nanodevices
that eventually escape from the lab and reduce the world to “gray goo”.
