We live and work in a society seemingly trapped by the illusions of fastness, and are driven by values celebrating the extremely flexible and mobile. We tend to confuse information with knowledge, and have dropped the words of wisdom. The need for time, space and breathing-space for reflection has never been greater.http://www.slowsociety.se/eng/
Locher suspects that Chang would have caught the mistake if he’d taken more time to obtain a higher resolution structure. “I think he was under immense pressure to get the first structure, and that’s what made him push the limits of his data,†he says. Others suggest that Chang might have caught the problem if he’d paid closer attention to biochemical findings that didn’t jibe well with the MsbA structure.Nature 2006, 314:1856-1857
Their mistake has consequences beyond the damage to the unfortunate young investigator and his team. For five years, other labs have been interpreting their biophysical and biochemical data in terms of the wrong structures. A number of scientists have been unable to publish their results because they seemed to contradict the published X-ray structures. I personally know of at least one investigator whose grant application was turned down for funding because his biochemical data did not agree with the structures. One could argue that an entire sub-field has been held back for years due to the inordinately persuasive power of the pretty pictures that structural biology produces. Genome Biology 2007, 8:103
Until recently, Geoffrey Chang’s career was on a trajectory most young scientists only dream about. In 1999, at the age of 28, the protein crystallographer landed a faculty position at the prestigious Scripps Research Institute in San Diego, California. The next year, in a ceremony at the White House, Chang received a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, the country’s highest honor for young researchers. His lab generated a stream of high-profile papers detailing the molecular structures of important proteins embedded in cell membranes. Then the dream turned into a nightmare. In September, Swiss researchers published a paper in Nature that cast serious doubt on a protein structure Chang’s group had described in a 2001 Science paper. When he investigated, Chang was horrified to discover that a homemade data-analysis program had flipped two columns of data, inverting the electron-density map from which his team had derived the final protein structure. Unfortunately, his group had used the program to analyze data for other proteins. As a result, Chang and his colleagues retract three Science papers and report that two papers in other journals also contain erroneous structures.
the idea of a Slow School ... brings to mind an institution where students have time to discuss, argue, and reflect upon knowledge and ideas, and so come to understand themselves and the culture they will inherit. ...public education has taken as its model not the moral character of Slow Food but the commercial character of fast food....schooling based on standardized tests and targets treats students as vessels to be filled rather than people who want to understand, to be inspired, to make something of themselves.
"If I can operate Google, I can find anything... Google, combined with Wi-Fi, is a little bit like God. God is wireless, God is everywhere and God sees and knows everything. Throughout history, people connected to God without wires. Now, for many questions in the world, you ask Google, and increasingly, you can do it without wires, too."Alan Cohen, V.P. of Airespace, a new Wi-Fi provider, New York Times, 6/29/03
