Urgently wanted: Teachers or magicians

The national exams are barely two months away, and if you have some time to spare, and the ability (professional or magical) to teach a ninth-grader all he needs to know about maths before April, SMP 3 Junior High on Deer Island in Papua has a job vacancy for you to fill.

"The students are prepared to sit for extra classes every day until the lights go out" when the island's generator stops, said Nikolas Watem, a teacher at the school on the island in Raja Ampat regency, about three hours by speedboat from Sorong Port in northwest Papua.

He's one of three junior high teachers on the island. A total of 38 students are due to sit the April exams.

As of mid-February, the school had no one to specifically teach any of the three subjects that will be tested nationwide: math, English and Indonesian.

Watem and another teacher, Yustius Umpain, do their best to fill in the gaps. Watem teaches Indonesian along with other subjects; Umpain takes geography and history. None of the students own text books, so they copy notes straight from the board.

The principal, who often has to work away from the island for months on end, teaches civics.

The parents have said they are prepared to pay twice the usual monthly fee of Rp 50,000 (US$5.26) proposed by the teachers to help hire new staff -- anything to make sure their children graduate.

SMP 3's parents and teachers are both dedicated to the school, and the local community has a greater awareness of the importance of education, where once children skipped school to go fishing with their parents.

This dedication is why there are a few clearly overgrown students wearing the uniform of blue shorts -- 19-year-old fishermen share the classroom with much younger children.

The teachers say they have no idea how the school will be able to repeat its success of seven consecutive years of 100 percent graduation. This doesn't necessarily mean high marks, but it does require the minimum grade of 2.6 out of 10.

Raja Ampat was made a regency in 2002.

"But we've been asking for more teachers for the last five years," Watem said.
