3-Year Engineering PhD Scholarship in Kochi, Southern Japan

Outline of The Special Scholarship Program
Special Scholarship established in 2003 in order to support the advanced research of the university by enlisting the help of highly capable international students. Every year in April and October, the university enrolls selected foreign doctoral students under specific research projects. The students pursue the doctoral course in English while at the same time assisting their host professor as a research assistant (RA). As of January 2007, 39 Ph.D candidates from 7 countries are studying under this program. Through this program KUT wishes to expand and deepen international ties with academic and educational institutions all over the world   

    * Number of students to be admitted: 20 students per year
    * Enrollment tune: April / October
    * Application deadline for October 2007 enrollment: March 31,2007

Requirements and Eligibility for Admission
Applicants are required to meet all of the following conditions:
     1. To have, or to be expected to acquire before enrollment, a master’s degree.
     2. To have an excellent academic record.
     3. To be 35 years old or under at the time of enrollment.
     4. To have nationality other than Japanese.
     5. To have intention and adequate skill to initiate and to complete one of KUT’s university projects
     6. To have high English proficiency
Benefits for Successful Applicants

   1. Exemption from the 300,000 yen enrollment fee, the 940,000 yen (per year) tuition fee, the 150,000 yen (per year) cost of experiments and laboratory work, and the 150,000 yen (per year) fee lor facilities improvement.
   2. Pay of up to 1,200,000 yen per year for working as a Research Assistant
   3. 200,000 yen for travel and initial living costs (given only to applicants who are living outside Japan at the time of application). This is paid only once, when students arrive at KUT.

Application Process

    * Required application documents

          1. Completed application form
          2. Academic Transcripts for completed Bachelor’s and Master’s programs
          3. Master’s degree certificate/Certificate specifying the expected date of your acquisition of the master’s degree (if the applicant is still working towards the degree)
          4. Outline of intended research.
          5. Two letters of recommendation
          6. Certificate of Health
          7. Two recent photographs

    * English writing test and interview (as required)

         1. Applicants may be required to sit for an interview and take an English writing test.


Support Systems

    * English technical writing class
      1.  Given to first and second year students by a native English professor
    * Japanese language class for daily conversation and grammar
      1.  Elementary 1 - three times a week
      2.  Elementary 2 - twice a week
      3.  Intermediate - once a week
    * Tutor support system
      1.  Tutors assist new international students with academic and daily life matters.
    * KUT dormitories for international students

          1.  Two KUT dormitories are available for international students.
