Globally, demand for energy services, dominated by fossil fuels, is high and growing. As a majority of the world's energy supply is generated from fossil fuels such as coal, oil and natural gas. These traditional energy sources face a number of challenges including rising prices, security concerns and growing environmental concerns over the climate change risks associated with power generation using fossil fuels. As a result of these, governments, businesses and consumers are increasingly supporting the development of alternative energy sources. Sustainable energy-including biomass, geothermal, hydropower, solar, wind, tidal, and wave- offers tremendous benefits for meeting global energy needs. In the last few years, sustainable energy engineering has experienced improvements in performance, and reliability, making them competitive today in a wide range of applications. By the year 2030, sustainable energy application is expected to grow rapidly, especially in developed countries and a few developing countries.

Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI), Research Center for Electrical Power and Mechatronics is organizing an International Conferences on Sustainable Energy Engineering and Application (ICSEEA) 2012. Biomass and solar energy become the main topic on this conference since those have emerged as the most rapidly growing renewable sources of energy and the combustion do not contribute additional greenhouse gases to the atmosphere. It is expected this conference will provide a forum to exchange experiences on sustainable energy development, share views on policies and approaches, and promote international cooperation, with a particular emphasis on biomass and solar energy.

This event also has aim to encourage member countries to find a feasible solution concerning renewable energy applications, substantially from biomass and solar, which nowadays become a world issue in creating global energy security.
